Samuel De Champlain.

1a. Find a picture of Samuel De Champlain. What does he look like? Explain the picture in 5-8 sentences. 1b. Remember to answer 1a before you do this question. Who is he? What is his nationality? What is his background?

Picture from: www.fotosearch.com/IST501/1151391/

Samuel
De Champlain has curly hair(I do not know the color..) and round face. It seems like that he has a double chin. He has sunken eyes, straight nose, and a big mouth. His mustache makes him look like so amiable. This picture shows that Samuel is a little fat and a graceful man.

Background:

<1>Samuel De Champlain, French navigator, born in Brouage, Saintonge, on the bay of Biscay, in 1567 ; died in Quebec, 25 Dec, 1635. He was a Catholic. Also, he was the pioneer of the fur trade between North America and France. <2>His father was a ship-captain, so that he received a careful education such as cartography, navigation, astronomy and mathematics. His uncle was a mariner. He accompanied with his father and uncle on various sea voyage.

<3>In 1587, Samuel De Champlain joined the French army.
In 1598, Samuel De Champlain joined his uncle who was
Pilot-General for Spanish fleet transporting Spanish soldiers from France to Spain. In 1599-1602, Samuel De Champlain made various voyages visiting Vera Cruz, Mexico, Columbia and Panama. In 1602, Aymar De Chaste had obtained a monopoly of the fur trade and set up a trading post at the port of Tadoussac in Quebec. He offered Samuel the opportunity to join an exploration and colonize his lands in Quebec. In 1603, Samuel De Champlain anchored at Port Royal where they set up a new colony. In 1608, Samuel De Champlain found and named Quebec, then he decided to form a settlement here.

2. What is his relationship with Canada? Why is he important to Canada?

Founding of Quebec city is one of Samuel De Champlain's achievements.
In the spring of 1608, a ship commanded by Champlain left the Frenc
h port of Honfleur. In June, the small group of man-only settlers arrived at Tadoussac. There, they left the ship and continued to Quebec in a small boat. On July 3, 1608, Champlain landed at the "point of Quebec" and set about fortifying the area by building the three main buildings. The area was to become the city of Quebec. Fortifying Quebec city became one of his passions, which he embarked on periodically for the rest of his life. Then Champlain transported a lot of French settlers to Quebec.
Now, Quebec is the biggest French area in Canada! It is the cont
ribution of Champlain for Canada.

3. When did he explore? What was happening during history at this time?

From 1693, he began to explore. He had a war with native. During the summer of 1609, Champlain attempted to form better relations with the local First Nations. He made alliances with the Wendat that the French called Huron and with the Algonquin, the Montagnais and the Etchemin, who lived in the area of the St. Lawrence River and who demanded that Champlain help them in their war against the Iroquois, who were much more to the south. Champlain set off with 9 French soldiers and 300 natives in order to explore the Richelieu River when he subsequently mapped Lake Champlain. Having had no encounters with the Iroquois at this point many of the men headed back, leaving Champlain with only 2 Frenchmen and 60 natives.

4. Where did he explore? Find a map to help you answer this question. Post the map here and then explain.

In 1603, Champlain sailed to France on Francois Grave Du Pont's expedition.

The pair and their crew sailed west through the Gulf of St. Lawrence and into the St. Lawrence and Saguenay Rivers.

They also explored misty Gaspe' Peninsula of Quebec.

Champlain returned to Quebec in 1604 on Pierre de Mont's expedition.

For the next three years, Champlain explored much of the coast of Nova Scotia, the Bay of Fundy and the coasts of Maine, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Champlain started his first colony in the New World on Port Royal, Nova Scotia in 1605.

In 1608, Champlain started the first permanent French colony in the New World at Quebec (City) on the St. Lawrence River.

Picture from: www.mrnussbaum.com/champ2.htm..

5. Why did he explore? What were his reasons for exploration?
Because exploration became one of Samuel De Champlain's passions. In fact, he did a successful explorer. The King and citizens gave him great confidence. He determined to establish a French colony, transport French to there. H
e wanted to search for a Northwest Passage and to settle the Gasp Peninsula. He wanted to build up a fur-trading center. These actions showed his patriotic clearly. Also, he made a gigantic devotion for his country! Just for one reason: He did a lot of significant achievements in his whole life!

6. How did he explore? What transportation methods did he use? Champlain explored Canada by ships and small boats. He was so smart because he explored with others who has the permission of the King, so that it could help him save a lot money. Also, sailed as a small group and avoid a lot troubles, such as organization, shortage of money and food. At that time, there was not any plane, train and car in there, so perhaps ship was the most convenient transportation in the world. Ship was beneficial for Champlain because he could see the landscape on the sides clearly, knew more the geography about the place he explored.

Bonus
1. Can you find a statue or a monument of Samuel De Champlain? Post it here and explain in 3-5 sentences.
picture from:
www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/on-line-exhibi...
Statue of Samuel De Champlain, Sigmund Samuel Building,
94 Queen's Park Crescent, Toronto, [between 1951 and 1964]
This statue is black and white. Champlain is closing his big eyes, we can guess he is thinking about his successful achievement. Also, his right hand is holding a paper, like map. In brief, this statue shows us a great explorer, who likes thinking, thinking and thinking.

Reflection.

1. What have you learned since September in Canadian Studies? (Or since you started to take the class)

Time goes on, I just realized that I have been in Sino-Bright School for seven months and I have been learning Canadian Studies for seven months, too. During the seven months, the most I learned is knowledge. Now, I have learned lots of knowledge include geography, history, demography and vegetation of Canada. Such as native peoples, eight regions, the vikings, the explorers, etc. What is more, Canadian Studies not only broaden my horizon but also improve my skills. I used to hate geography, but making a concept map arouse my interest in learning geography, and how to study effective. We always had many group works. I used to like work with myself, but someday I found out that group work is more excellent. That is what I learned in Canadian Studies. Thank you, Canadian Studies!

2. What is the most memorable lesson you remember? (if you weren't here, maybe at another school)

The most memorable lesson I remember is making a viking ship. Before made it, we got a great deal of informations about a traditional viking ship. At first, we crunched the newspapers into a lot of tight balls, and put them together for forcing a shape of viking ship. Then gave it varied colors and viking symbols. During making it, we had to face some difficulties and we fixed all of them together. We not only improve our design skill but also use our smart brain to keep the ship floating in the water. I realized that we are powerful as a group. We showed good teamwork and got along well with each other. I was proud of that.

3. Think about your life as a student here since September. Have you changed? How?

I was a lazy girl. My life was disorganized. I am not sure that if I am lazy now, but not really. My attitude was changed a lot. For example, I always got the second highest mark in every single Math test, but never the No.1. = = I was not unhappy because of I did not get the No.1, because of I thought all the questions I did were correct, but there were still some little mistakes. = = But this semester, I found out the reason--Because I am lazy!!!! I did not like admit that before. = = I listened in class but I did not do my homework carefully; I did my math homework but I did not review it carefully.= = That is why I always get No.2= =

OK, but now I found out that, my attitude is changing. At least, I am trying. I made plan for every single day. I finished all the lessons of "Worldly Wise 1", and I will finish the rest eight lessons of "Worldly Wise 2". After get those vocabulary, I will improve my writing sill next. There are a lot of things for me to do..= =

4. What is your goal for yourself by June? What is your plan to study?

Goal:

1. Get straight As..I hope..a little difficult.
2. Pass the Science&English 10 provincial exams, I don't worry about my math provincial exam.=)
3. Get a lots of vocabularies and wish i can write an excellent essay.

Plan:

Finish "World Wise 3",(Dear Ms.Chan, can you give it to me next week? I can't wait to see you, my dear "World Wise 3"=)). Write more essays. Doing things effectively.

5. What are you most proud of in school since September? Have you done your best?

When we made the puppet show, I got along well with my groupies. I am proud of our teamwork. I really enjoy drawing and singing!!!! I am blissful for spending a lot time on the things I love!

Bonus

1. Is there anything else you want to tell me or reflect about?

Yes.. Recently, my laziness came back to me.. After seeing my grade of English 10 and Canadian Studies, I realized that I must abandon it forever..= =never get it again!!!From now on!!!

Exploration is good for countries.

Topic:exploration is good for countries.
-Jessie

Exploration is one of the most important steps of people in history. In 1497, John Cabot started his first voyage with his soldiers. After a few days sailing, eventually, he found a new land- New foundland. What happen if Cabot did not find the new land? People would not know today's Canda. The poor cities would still so poor.Exploratiion is good for coutries because it is helpful for getting more fertile resources to develop cities, it can help countries expand territories and it can arouse the spirit of discovery of people.

Exploration is good for countries because it's helpful for getting more fertile resources to develop cities. As we know, if the government want to change a poor city into a super city, the first thing they should do is develop their economy. To discover new lands, get more resources, such as oil, coal, and take them to the poor city. The poor city can create resource trade to get money. Then use the income to develop its environment, education and industry. In brief, the recourses are beneficial. In 1497, a famous explorer named John Cabot started his first voyage, and he discovered Newfoundland. During the voyage, He found a new kind of fish-Cod. In according to history, Cabot took Cod back to England, and gave it to the King, Henry VII. From then on, many English began to make Cod trade. Their living standards remarkably improved. The city was getting more and more rich. Therefore, exploration is good for countries.

Exploration is good for countries because it can help countries expand territories. After dicovering Canada, French government distributed a lot of French to there. There is where we called Quebec now. At that time, Quebec was French colony so that French can develop their economy and industry in two places, and get double profit. Hence, exploration is good for countries.

There is no doubt that exploration is important for countries, because exploration can arouse the discovery of people. The discovery of John Cabot convinced that everything is possible. As long as you try, new land is in front of you. From then on, it increased people's confidence of facing difficults. When the country's economy was in decline, people wound not give up because they would get courage as long as they were thinking of John Cabot's sailing. Thus, the exploration of Cabot gave people boldness to overcome challenge. Therefore, exploration is good for countries.

All in all, exploration is good for countries because it is helpful for getting fertile recourses to develop cities, it can help countries expand territory and it can arouse the spirit of discovery of people. By exploration, the country's everything will be more and more better; By exploration, pherhaps humans will find out the whole universal someday. Exploration shows how great human is, how smart human is. It is no doubt that exploration is good for countries.

Final Essay.

Topic:Exploration can create conflicts and misunderstanding.
Tittle: Suddenly Cartier see
--Jessie

When Jacques Cartier was a little boy, an old man with white hair told him significantly,” Your will be a successful explorer, your will sail to a mysterious place.” At that time, Cartier could not understand what the strange old man said. However, it is fate, nobody can stop fate. In 1534, when Cartier became a forty-three-year-old adult who was an explorer, he started his first voyage with his soldiers. Eventually, as we know, Cartier found Canada and became one of the most notable explorers of the world. Before his first voyage, Cartier did not realize that exploration can create conflicts and misunderstanding by awful first impressions, communication disorders and strong possessive instinct, but he never regretted to do such great achievement.

After few days sailing, all the soldiers were so famished. Suddenly, to their surprise, they saw a new land. They landed at there. Cartier was exciting for the beauty of the landscape. Some of the soldiers laid on the green grass, others prepared for a picnic. It seemed liked they would hold a party to celebrate their discovery. Some Indians heard the soldier’s cheering. They came running towards the soldiers. When the soldiers and Indians saw each other, they were too afraid to say anything. They had different skin colors: the Indian had black skin and the European had white skin. The most important is, the Indian hold the spears and the European hold cane knives. It looked like they came from different planets. Cartier hated the awful first impressions, and the Indians darted a hostile glance at them. Actually, that was not Cartier wanted. At that moment, Cartier realized that exploration can create conflict and misunderstand by awful first impressions.

Cartier wanted to change the nervous atmosphere, so he talked to the Indians,” Who is your chief?” Then a short man with the longest spear said a long sentence liked a bird to Cartier. Certainly, Cartier understood nothing. Then the man said the long sentence again and again until he started to be angry, Cartier still understood nothing and shake his head. The Indians laughed at Cartier. Obviously, they had different language, it was impossible to understand. Finally, the chief was so angry so that he sited on the ground and kept talked to Cartier crazy. Cartier could not keep being patient and he was confused. After a while, Cartier lost his patient. When he faced the new land, he could not stop himself getting the new land. He talked to all the soldiers,” Do you want to get the new land?” All of the soldiers responded “yes”. Then Cartier yelled at the Indians,” I do not care if you can understand me, but we will colonize here! ” It precipitated a big war was coming. Suddenly Cartier realized that exploration can create conflict and misunderstand by communication disorders.

The Indian and the European fought for a long time. When Cartier was fighting with an Indian, he was thinking of getting the new land for his country. At the same time, when the Indian was fighting with Cartier, he was thinking of protecting the land for his nation. They kept fighting until there was no fight left in the Indians.

Eventually, the Indians failed. The fight of an exploration always have this kind of consequence: One side wins, the other side fails. Certainly, no one want to see fight, but no one can stop it. After the first voyage, Jacques Cartier realized that exploration can create conflicts and misunderstanding by awful first impressions, communication disorders and strong possessive instinct, but he never regretted to do such great achievement.

What You Think is What You See

1. If the maps around you showed the existence of the Northwest Passage, would you believe it? Why?
Perhaps. If the maps around me showed the existence of the Northwest Passage, I would believe or not, it is depend on if I will go there in the future. If I will go there to find out the Northwest Passage, I won't believe it because i have not saw it by myself. If I won't go there in the future, I would rather believe it. Society has a pound imp
act on our daily life, if public says that it exist, it may be true. Of course I think the existence of the Northwest Passage is good for humans, exploration is beneficial for countries because it could take resources and new lands.

2. If you were John Cabot and someone told you the Northwest Passage didn't exist. What would you say? What would you feel? How would you react?
I would say nothing..= =That's possible, it seems like every place of the Earth is discovered, but there are still some magic places have not discovered. So humans are not know the Earth completely, nothing is impossible, at least I think so. I would feel some feelings that is cheated, because everything the explorer said sound true. I would hope the new places are discovered, the more places are discovered, the faster the technique improved.

3. Find a map by Humphrey Gilbert from 1582. What do you see in the picture? Explain.
Picture from: www.enchantedlearning.com/.../namerica.shtml
Humphrey Gilbert's map describes the route chart about the exploration. He traveled around Northwest. He began at England and traveled to Canada. He passed through the Newfoundland and come over to Nova Scottie. Then he came back from there to Azores. His exploration is from European to Northwest. That is the whole exploration route. It is a long journey, but he never gave up.

4. Why did the Northwest Passage suit the goals (agenda) of the European explorers and monarchs?
The Northwest has lots of valuable riches, such as the cod, furs and fertile lands. The cod is delicious, the furs can create fur trade to make more love, and the fertile lands can provide more plants. Also, the foods and the plants are different from the Europeans see as usual. That's why the Northwest Passage suit the goals of the European explorers

5. Feedback loops help us to see reality as a system. Can you think of an example of a feedback loop from your own life? Look at page 225 of your textbook to help you.

There is a very good example of feedback system. In a negative feedback system some factor, such as blood pressure, changes. The change is detected by a sensor. The sensor sends a message to an integrating center which in turn stimulates an effector. The effector will do something to alter the factor that changed.
6. What did you learn so far about explorers and the colonization of Canada?

So far I learned a lot of knowledge about Canada. Canada was discovered by some great explorers, such as John Cabot, Jacques Cartiers and others explorers. That's explain that why English and French is the two official language of Canada, why Quebec is French district. Because at first Canada was colonized by English and French.

Every decision has its consequence.

Topic: Every decision has its consequence.
__________________________Who Should I Obey?__________________________

During the first week of last summer vacation, my life was so disorganized: I did not get up until 10 a.m. and I went to bed at 21:30. My room was in mess, and I watched movies all day. The most important is, I did not have any difficult homework to do. In my father’s words, I lived like a pig! I agreed because I have put on weight! One day when I laid on my bed like an octopus, I started to think about these lazy days, I asked myself,” Do you like present life? Lazy girl? ” “Of course not, that’s too dull!” I replied instantly. To be honest, at that time, I really missed the busy days that I liked a piece of bread baking in the oven. Then I covered up my head with the pillow. The very next day, I saw an introduction of yoga on a stranger’s blog. It talked about that yoga is a good discipline for learning to relax and keeping fit. It is a good way to keep away from laziness. Not only that, there was a phone number of a yoga club. “Wow, what a beneficial sport it is! I like it!” I screamed. At that moment, I knew I would face a decision that would fill me with doubt, but i did not realize that my decision would bring a satisfying consequence.
“Mom, can I take yoga lessons?” I sounded my mother carefully. “Whatever, that’s your own right, you can decide it by yourself. The people who takes yoga lessons has great flexibility, don’t you remember that you have never got an A in splits test when you were in primary school?” My mother’s attitude is unclear. Then I called my friend Cheer, I hoped that she can support me. “Practicing yoga is too tired, I am sure that you can not take it!” She said that on the phone. What can I do? It seemed like no one think that practicing yoga is a good idea, but I still a little want to take it in my heart. I was so confused. Should I give up the thought that according to others and obey my own thought? As the minute ticked away, I was sunk in the deeper thought.
There were two people in my heart, one is called Determination, and another is Hesitation. Determination shouted loudly,”You should be true to yourself. I know you want to take yoga lessons, just do it!” “Do not believe him! Your mother and your friend are right. To listen more what others spoke. You can not take it!” Hesitation yelled. They disputed for a long period. Eventually, Hesitation was defeated completely by Determination. I decided to take yoga lessons. I really wanted to keep healthy! Then I dialed the number of the yoga club nervously.

After registering the membership card of the yoga club, I started to take yoga lessons two times every week. My yoga teacher is so kind and professional, she taught us how to meditation and do different actions. She always said gently, "Just pay attention on your own breath, push all distractions aside", "You could have a rest if you are tired and your body is hurt, listen to your body's warning" and "Do not compare yourself with others, because everyone has different body condition; Compare with yourself, make a progress step by step". I kept remembering those words. Two weeks later, I found that I keep fit successfully and I just ate foods that are not greasy or strongly flavored. Not only that, I have been practicing yoga for one year now, I found that my inner world was totally changed. I threw away my vanity, just do what I can do, compare myself with the past Jessie and have rests properly so that I never complain that "Why are others better than me?" I started to feel the beauty of life, thank for life sincerely.

What a correct decision I made! I learned a valuable lesson from not only taking yoga lessons but also making a decision. I concentrate more on what I want, what I think, obey to my own feeling and thought. At the same time, accept some others' ideas. When you embrace yourself, the world will huge you. What are you thinking now?

Flat Earth

1. Find two pictures showing the earth is flat.
<1>Picture from: theflatearthsociety.net/forum/in...
The radius of the sun's orbit around the Earth's axis symmetry varies throughout the year, being smallest when summer is in the northern annulus and largest when it is summer in the southern annulus.

<2>Picture from: www.eruptingmind.com/success-fac...
The clouds are gathering. We can see the beauty sight form this picture. The two ships are sailing in the blue sea. They are churning the wonderful waves. Or maybe those are not sea, they are mountains. It seems like that the left ship would fall off!! That's explain earth is flat. People would not sail too far into the distance for fear of falling off the ends of the earth.

<3>. Picture from:
www.icis.com/.../sustainability/
The earth is flat and the moon orbits in a "halo" type configuration above the earth. This hypothesis predicts that the moon's distance distance from any point on earth will vary widely with time. Sometimes moon will going as far as doubling it's distance from a given point on earth. That's all because the earth is flat!

2. Imagine you are a person who believes the earth is still flat today. What are 5 reasons to support your argument that it is still flat?
<1>. The Bible itself implies the Earth is flat (for example at Daniel 4:11 or 4:8 in Catholic Bibles)If the
<2>. Earth were spinning, all the continents would move toward the equator.
<3>. When you look at pictures of the round Earth taken from space, you must remember that gravity bends light so straight objects appear curved and curved objects appear straight.
<4>. The horizon is a straight line that we see.
<5>. We only can see a flat land when we try to capture the shape of the earth, because the earth's actual size is too huge.

3. Do you think human beings have a false concept of the earth and the universe today?
Yeah, I do think human beings have a false concept of the earth and the universe today. "Flat Earth" is a very good example to explain that. In the past, people used to think that earth is flat. But in this modern century, people can use high-techniques to discover that actually earth is round. Technology is developing rapidly, it still has a lot of space to develop. So it means humans have more ability to discover the unknown things. People used to define the earth by eyes, but they will find the mistakes they made with the technology develops.
