Summertime, and after summertime

Poem by Jessie Liu

Changes were coming your way,

when the endless summertime hadn't gone yet

You had forgotten how inconsolable you were

At that time

It rained on and off all day

You huddled yourself up on the dark-green bench cautiously,

like a poor pussy cat that was abandoned by its heartless master

You lips could hardly frame any words

At that time

It rained on and off all day

You swept silently and sat on the cold step outside the door,

heard nothing but the sound of silence

You were scared beyond words

The sun was gone

The day was done

At that time

Darkness reached its hands out and closed around you,

the night was longer than the day

Changes were coming your way,

when the endless summertime hadn't gone yet

You had forgotten how you desired to be melted by the turbid air,

which almost suffocated you

You had forgotten how you longed to keep away from the wicked world,

which nearly murdered your trueness

You thought you have passed the most horrific customs barrier

All because you had forgotten how inconsolable you were

Nevertheless,

summertime too swiftly flown away

The real season just started

You sunk fast into an ocean full of darkness,

slept deeply, floated on the surface

Darkness reached its hands out and closed around you again,

You knew, again and again

You lost your senses and rode your bike so fast,

when the rain was teeming down

However, as you knew

Whatever you did, you couldn't get away of it at all

——the circle of darkness

The real season just started

After summertime,

the street was like it used to be:

A broken bike, an obsolete bench, and a sad boy

The night was longer than you imagined

The disappointed season is always longer than you imagined

C'est La Vie? (This is life?)

No one, no one could understand you at all.

An Alliance with the Huron Empire

The Hurons were a group of First Nations people who were in an alliance with Champlain. They were closely related to the Iroquois, but had become their enemies.

The Lonely Land
A.J.M. Smith

Cedar and jagged fir

uplift sharp barbs

against the gray

and cloud-piled sky;

and in the bay

blown spume and windrift

and thin, bitter spray

snap

at the whirling sky;

and the pine trees

lean one way.

A wild duck calls

to her mate,

and ragged

and passionate tones

stagger and fall,

and recover,

and stagger and fall,

on these stones -

are lost

in the lapping of water

on smooth, flat stones.

This is a beauty

of dissonance,

this resonance

of stony strand,

this smoky cry

curled over a black pine

like a broken

and wind-battered branch

when the wind

bends the tops of the pine

like a broken

and wind-battered branch

when the wind

bends the tops of the pines

and curdles the sky

from the north.

This is the beauty

of strength

broken by strength

and still strong

0508REFLECTION

Actually, I have to say, this week is such a lazy week. I am afraid that I have to be hardworking on weekends might because I wasted a lot of precious time.
To be honest, I have just read seven paragraphs of the attractive novel "To Kill Mockingbird". Last week, I read the summary of Chapter 1-3 carefully instead of the novel for getting ready for the following test. (Ms.Chan, I know you will eat me if you see this sentence..) Fortunaly, I passed the test at ease..
However, now I'm a little comfusing about drawing the concept map of it. All because I did not read it at all.
This short weekend is such a wonderful time to read the novel, not only the English vision but also the Chinese one. I will, I have to..
Moreover, we wrote a literary essay about poems on Friday morning. It is toooooo difficult! It helps me to find my weakness in writing essays, such as shortage of sentence patterns, grammar skills and a less powerful and boring conclusion. I will deal with them next time. Thanks for Ms.Chan, Jessica, Nina, and Angela gave me useful ideas to write it! I will tell more cold jokes to you!
Well, I'm gonna to see an English film now..:D
Enjoy your weekend!XD

I has been afflicted with painful right foot for one month!!T_T

The doctor said that my bone was okay, but there was something wrong with my tendon, so that he told me not to take too much exercise, even walking.

However, I have to climb to flour 4, across a lot of streets, take subway and take bus everyday! The painful tendon can not afford such too much work. It results in a great sore inside of my right feet, not all the time, but a specific time. When it was hurting, It made me shed tears..Rena knows that I cry hardly ever in daily life..This time, I was defeated by the pain completely.

But I still can walk like normal persons because my bone is okay. So, you know, when I said my right feet was too hurt, nobody believed me!! What a tradegy! They only looked at the surface and no one would see I exclaimed inside of my heart. I could not find any appropriate words to describe how hurt it was, so that no one would understand me! Even Mrs.Yang, she said,"Are you tell a lie? I saw you walk quickly and comfortable like others." I was so sad, how can her said I told a lie??...

Yesterday, when I went to the computer lab, I felt the pain again and again, but I can't tell anybody. Who can believe me? I seat in front of my computer and kept shedding tears because of the pain. I came out in cold sweat.. Finally, I decided to go to the school clinic alone for asking some pain killer.

When I came out the building two, Jessica chased me. I was accompanied with her to the clinic and she took care of me all the time until lunch time! I deeply appreciated her!!! Kind Jessica, gave me hands, gave me power and made me warm..

I always think that Jessica is helping me all the time from the first day I met her, not only on study but also in daily life. Just like today, she helped again..

I really wanna say: Thank U!!Jessica!!^ ^

Anyway, I will take care of myself!!

Samuel De Champlain - Port Royal

1. Why would Samuel De Champlain want to have a monopoly on the fur trade? Explain in 3-5 sentences. What does monopoly mean?
What is monopoly? Monopoly is the complete control of trade in particular goods. In other words, it is the supply of a particular service. Monopoly can help people get richer and richer and destroy all the competitors. That was what Samuel wanted to do. He wanted to have a monopoly on the fur trade, so that he could get money in an instant. From then on, he did not have any competitors to get his money.People who wanted furs had to listen to Samuel. He wanted control the whole fur market. Also, don't forget that Samuel wanted to set up French colonies in Canada. If he could have a monopoly on the fur trade, it was easier to control the area.

2. Why would the King want to set up French colonies in Canada? Explain in 3-5 sentences.
France is in Eu
rope, and it covers 547030 square kilometers. It has the largest area among European Union members and slightly larger than Spain. However, there are a lot of strong competitors of France, such as German, England and Spain. The King was searching to find a new way to strong his country. Just at that time, Champlain found Quebec, which was suitable for France to set up French colonies. If the King could set up a French colonies in Canada, he could transport some French to there, and use new land's cruel materials and vegetations. This is a good way to expand and strong France.

Champlain first attempted to create a small trading post called "Port Royal" in what is now Nova Scotia. It was not a great success because there was no business and the settlement was abandoned by 1607.

3. Can you find two pictures of Port Royal, Nova Scotia today on the Internet? What does it look like? Explain each picture in 5-8 sentences what you see.
picture from:www.sonofthesouth.net/leefoundat...
Port Royal was a trading post. In this quaint picture, it is extinct that the picture shows a port like a small town. There are some people along the river who are waiting for the coming ships with cargo of furs. Leaves of the trees are ballooning. The whole picture gives us a feeling of loneliness, it means the Port Royal just had little businesses.

picture from:www.hickerphoto.com/port-royal-n...
When the settlement was abandoned in 1607, some settlers were permitted to stay if they agreed not to work on the fur trade. They became highly skilled farmers and would form the colony of Acadia (as we have learned before).

This picture shows the buildings of Port Royal. There are a lot of rows of buildings. Each row consists of three to four small houses. I have to say that, these houses are quaint! Until today, these house are still not out of style. Therefore, the authority really pay so much attention on develop the Port Royal. Though the settlement was abandoned by 1607, the amazing buildings were retained.
