Summertime, and after summertime
Poem by Jessie Liu
Changes were coming your way,
when the endless summertime hadn't gone yet
You had forgotten how inconsolable you were
At that time
It rained on and off all day
You huddled yourself up on the dark-green bench cautiously,
like a poor pussy cat that was abandoned by its heartless master
You lips could hardly frame any words
At that time
It rained on and off all day
You swept silently and sat on the cold step outside the door,
heard nothing but the sound of silence
You were scared beyond words
The sun was gone
The day was done
At that time
Darkness reached its hands out and closed around you,
the night was longer than the day
Changes were coming your way,
when the endless summertime hadn't gone yet
You had forgotten how you desired to be melted by the turbid air,
which almost suffocated you
You had forgotten how you longed to keep away from the wicked world,
which nearly murdered your trueness
You thought you have passed the most horrific customs barrier
All because you had forgotten how inconsolable you were
Nevertheless,
summertime too swiftly flown away
The real season just started
You sunk fast into an ocean full of darkness,
slept deeply, floated on the surface
Darkness reached its hands out and closed around you again,
You knew, again and again
You lost your senses and rode your bike so fast,
when the rain was teeming down
However, as you knew
Whatever you did, you couldn't get away of it at all
——the circle of darkness
The real season just started
After summertime,
the street was like it used to be:
A broken bike, an obsolete bench, and a sad boy
The night was longer than you imagined
The disappointed season is always longer than you imagined
C'est La Vie? (This is life?)
No one, no one could understand you at all.
