Jacques Cartier

Picture from:ffffound.com/image/3482dde7cfc1720a49e393ed00...

In this picture, Jacques Cartier is in his boat. He is touching his dense beard and holding his right hand in his side. It looks like he is thinking about something important, perhaps it is his sailing. And he looks so serious, beecause he is in black coat, with black cap. This picture shows us that he has the sence of an expectional explorer--calm and clever.

In this picture, Jacques Cartier's wearing is the same as picture1, he's still perky and serious, but the situation is different. The backgroud of this picture is a map, there'are Cartier' ship and some other boats in the map. Cartier is peering at his ship and the sailing rout. Also, he holds a globe, we can guess that he wants to find the correct rout to Asia. From his big eyes, we can know that he can think problems deeply and thoughtful. It shows that he want to achieve his dream of sailing the whole world.

<5>. Find a map of one of his voyages. Post it here and explain his voyage. Where did he go?

On June 9th, 1534, Cartier sailedinto the waters of the St.Lawrence River in eastern Canada. Although he couldn't travel up the tiver all the way to Asia, Cartier had in fact discovered an important waterway into the vast areas of Canada.

Jacques Cartier set sail for a second voyage on May 19 of the following year with three ships, 110 men, and the two native boys. Reaching the St. Lawrence, he sailed up-river for the first time, and reached the Iroquoian village of Stadacona where Chief Donnacona was reunited with his two sons.

<6>. First Nations people were the original people who lived in Canada before the Europeans came.

Imagine how you would feel seeing the Europeans for the first time. What would you think? What would you say? What would you do?

Watch this video and then answer question 6 carefully in 5-8 sentences.

I am a first nation people. When i saw the Europeans came to our land, i was astonished at first!!They were so strange! Strange clothes, strange eyes, strange hairs, everything was strange!! I started to wonder wonder what they would do, i was a little nervous. Would they eject us? Would they seize us? But i was wrong. They looked like so friendly and it seemed like they would not hurt us. Then, we decided to welcome them, met the new friends. Our chief talked to their leader, he said,"Hello, welcome to our vallage." Thanks for the translator, their leader could understand what we said.

8. What is scurvy? Find a picture of scurvy and post it on your blog.

Scurvy is a disease caused by a lack of vitamin C, characterized by anaemia, spongy gums, bleeding beneath the skin, and (in infants) malformation of bones and teeth.

9. What happened to Donnaconna?
When Jacques Cartier first arrived there in 1534. Cartier seized Donnacona's sons, Dom Agaya and Taignoagny, and took them to France. They returned to Canada with Cartier the following year, showed him the entrance to the St. Lawrence River, and piloted him up the river to Stadacona, where this time, the French wintered.
Relations between the St. Lawrence Huadenosaunees and French deteriorated over the winter. In spring, Cartier invited Donnacona to a feast also inviting his companions and seized them, during the journey to France twenty-five died of scurvy, only Donaconna and nine others, including his two sons of the tribe made it to France.
Donnacona was well treated in France, being looked after at the king's expense. however he soon took sick and died from European diseases.

10. How would you feel if you were Donnaconna or the Iroquois people? Would you be friends with the French after this experience?

No, if i were the iroquois people. I think the relationship between French and our Nation would be even worse. First, i feel very sad because of the dead of our great chief--Donnaconna. Also, we lost a lot of peole in France. When will they come back? or they dead too? That's a question. At least, i won't belive French anymore, because they would give us misfortune.
