Something about John Cabot

<1> Find two pictures of John Cabot, post it.

This picture shows that John Cabot in red landed at Canada first time. This was probably Newfoundland but also possibly Cape Breton Island. He took possession of his discovery for England, which gave that country its first claim of overseas territories. In this picture, he looks very rich, and he is hailed by others.

John Cabot ( c. 1450 – c. 1498), this is a portrait of him. His face is thin with white hair and goatee. He has big eyes and a noble nose, his cheeks is not very smooth. He looks like so serious. This portrait shows us how John Cabot look like in his late years.

<2>Who is John Cabot?
1.John Cabot was an Italian navigator and explorer commonly credited as the first European to discover North America.
2.He moved to Venice in 1461, at the age of eleven.
3.He became a Venetian citizen in 1476.

4.In about 1482 he married a Venetian woman, Mattea.

5.He had three sons: Ludovico, Sebastiano and Sancio.
6.He is the son of merchant.
7.He sailed northwest, through the stormy Atlantic Ocean, and eventually came to North America.
8.He's discovery was earlier than Columbus.
9.He was born around 1455 in Gaeta.
10.He believed that Asia could be reached by sailing westward.
11.In 1483, Cabot moved to Bristol, England.
<3>Why is he important to Canadian history?
John Cabot explored North America for England in 1497 he sailed to what is now eastern Canada(Nefoundland). There is some controversy as to where he landed. He thought he reach at Asia, but actually, he found a new land but not Asia!! He opened the approach between North America and Europe. All in all, He is really important to Canadian history because he was the first european since Vikings to explore the mainland of North America and the first to search for Northwest passage.
<4>Why did he leave Europe?
Cabot traded in spices with the ports of the eastern Mediterranean, and became an expert mariner. Valuable goods from Asia - spices, silks, precious stones and metals - were brought either overland or up the Red Sea for sale in Europe. And he believed that Asia could be reached by sailing westward. So, he left Europe because he wanted to find new routes to Asia and its riches, especially China and Japan.
<5>What happened to John Cabot?
He was becoming more and more famous, and was highly praised by peoples.Along with Cabot Tower in St. John's, Newfoundland , Cabot is remembered in Bristol, England by the Cabot Tower , a 30-metre tall red sandstone tower of 1897 (the 400th anniversary of the landing) on Brandon Hill near the city centre , by a replica of the Matthew built in the city and by a statue of the explorer on the harbour side.
Cabot is also the namesake of John Cabot University, an American university established in 1972 in Rome, Italy.
Eventually, Cabot returned from his second espedition and died around 1499 in England, but some people believed that he never returned from his second voyage..

<7>What did you learn from the video clip?
From the video clip, the most important thing i learned is the achievement of John Cabot. John Cabot knew that there were a lot of valuable goods from Asia, and he wanted to sail to China and Japan. In 1483, Cabot moved to Bristol, England and King Henry VII like Cabot’s idea.He paid for Cabot to begin an exploration of the New World because Cabot convinced him that it was possible to reach Asia on a more northerly route than Columbus had taken, and this route would be even shorter! Finally, Cabot landed in the New World, believing that he had landed on the east coast of Asia. But actually, there was named "Newfoundland".
